Yes. Mailbeam uses SMTP handshaking — it initiates a connection with the mail server and tests whether the address is accepted, without actually delivering a message.
What does 'Unknown' status mean?
Unknown means Mailbeam could not determine with confidence whether the address is deliverable — typically because the domain's mail server blocks SMTP probes (common with Google and Microsoft). It is not necessarily invalid.
Is verifying someone's email address legal?
Verifying an email address you have legitimately collected (signup, contact form, business card) is generally legal. Using verification to scrape or validate email addresses without a legitimate relationship may violate GDPR, CAN-SPAM, or other laws depending on jurisdiction.
